Questions regarding eligibility

The information on this page will assist you in determining if you should complete the census.

The census should be completed by anyone who identifies as part of the Health Information Workforce in New Zealand.

1. Am I a part of the health information workforce in New Zealand?

This is a two part definition:

  1. You work (including volunteer or actively seeking) in a role where the primary function is related to developing, maintaining, or governing the systems for the management of health data, health information, or health knowledge (Gray & Butler-Henderson 2018).
  2. You work (including volunteer or actively seeking) for/with an organisation that operates in New Zealand, your role relates to the New Zealand operations, and relates to the health sector.

2. I meet the above definition but I am not currently working.

This may include someone who is actively seeking work, who has left the workforce but intends to return, or working in a volunteer capacity. You should still complete the census.

If you are not actively seeking work, and/or do not intend to return to this workforce, and/or not undertaking any volunteer role in the workforce, you should not complete this census.

3. I haven’t started working in this workforce, but am currently undertaking training that meets the above definition.

Unless you are actively seeking employment, or undertake volunteer work in this workforce, you should not complete the census.

4. I have two roles. One is a health information role. But I also have another (primary) role.

You should still complete the census.

5. I have been in the health information workforce in the past, but I am no longer in the workforce and am not actively seeking (planning) to return to the workforce.

This census is a snapshot of the current health information workforce, so you should not complete the census.

6. I am retired from the health information workforce, but I still volunteer (for example, industry association committee member).

You are still contributing to the workforce in New Zealand so you should still complete the census.

7. I do not live in Australia but I am working for/with an New Zealand organisation in a health information role or an international organisation that operates in New Zealand.

You should still complete the census if your role relates to the New Zealand operations of the organisation and relates to health.

8. I am qualified to work in New Zealand (for example, I have a New Zealand qualification) but I do not live in New Zealand and I do not work for an organisation that operates in New Zealand.

The New Zealand census is only for those contributing to the New Zealand workforce. You should not complete the New Zealand census. You should contact your local industry/professional association to inquire if they are conducting the census in their country, and if not, you are welcome to refer them to the New Zealand contacts.

9. I live and work in Australia and I missed the Australian census. Can I complete the New Zealand census instead?

The New Zealand census is only for those contributing to the New Zealand workforce, so wait for the 2020 Australian census and complete it then.
